Make Your Own Kefir
Kefir is an amazing probiotic drink that can help your digestive health, improve bone density and increase your immune systems. You can buy it at the supermarket or you can make it at home.
The store bought versions tend to have more sugar in them and other stabilizers for longer shelf life.
It’s really easy to make your own kefir. All you need are some kefir grains and milk.*
You add the two ingredients together in a mason jar. Loosely cover the jar and leave on your counter for approximately 24 hours.
When the milk looks like it’s starting to separate, drain the grains from the milk to create your kefir, which you will then store in the refrigerator. You can also add fruit to your kefir for more flavor.
Add the kefir grains to a new mason jar with more milk and the process occurs again.**
For a more specific description, watch the attached video.
*You can also make non-dairy kefir with milk substitutes but you will lose the benefits of Vitamin D and calcium provided by the cow’s milk. There is also a water based kefir option, but different grains are used.
**One of the really cool things about making kefir is that the grains “grow” every time you make it. I am happy to share my kefir grains with anyone who’s interested. You can also buy them online or in some health food stores.
